About Business and Management Studies at International Business School the Hague

Are you interested in doing a Ph.D.? The International Business School, The Hague (IBSH), offers a Ph.D. programme in Business and Management Studies, in cooperation with Sapienza University of Rome, Italy.

The Ph.D. programme is part-time, and therefore well-suited for professionals that want to get a doctorate in combination with their career. The Ph.D. programme.

The programme consists of a combination of intensive seminars and research assignments and a thesis/research project. Internationally acclaimed professors will deliver a 3-4 day seminar on current topics in business and management science and the candidates will write a research paper on each of the seminars. Apart from these topical seminars, there are a number of professional skills seminars on research methodology, academic presentation, and academic teaching.

After the candidates have concluded the seminar series, they will embark on writing the thesis proposal and performing their Ph.D. research, in cooperation with one of the professors of IBSH, Sapienza, or one of the professors in IBSH’s international network.

Finally, successful candidates will receive their doctorate degree from Sapienza University of Rome.


Seminars will be organized at IBSH in The Hague, The Netherlands or at Sapienza University, Rome, Italy. Candidates can take a maximum of 2 seminars online, though live presence at the seminars is encouraged. Seminars take 3-4 days, after which the students will write a research paper on the subject of the seminar. Presently, 5-6 seminars are planned per year.

Tuition Fees and Payment Terms

The tuition fee for the total programme is € 36,000. However we currently have a special offer, giving you the opportunity to study at reduced costs. For more information please contact us. The initial payment is € 9000, followed by payments of € 4500 per semester, until the total fee is completed. The tuition fee covers all academic services, such as seminars, thesis supervision and the issue of the degree, but it does not cover travel expenses and accommodation during the seminars, textbooks or study materials.

Visa and Accommodation

Candidates are responsible for obtaining visa and accommodation for the seminars. Please note that participation in the programme does not qualify the candidates for a longer term residence permit in the Netherlands or Italy. 

Programme modules

The programme consists of 5 modules:

  • Professional assessment I and II. These are case studies taken at the start of the programme and before the thesis project, to document the level and progress of the candidates.
  • Ten topical seminars of 3-4 days and writing a research paper per seminar. As an example, topics for the 2016-2017 term included: Business Ecosystems, Knowledge Management, International Taxation and “Offshore” Business, Brand Management, and Horizontal Company Architecture.
  • Four professional skills seminars: Research Methodology I and II, Academic Presentation and Academic Teaching.
  • Academic Teaching practical: Candidates will deliver a course to show their mastery of the Academic Teaching subject. 
  • Thesis proposal submission and thesis/research project, under supervision of a professor specialized in the subject and the IBSH dean’s office
