About Film Studies, MA - at University of Exeter

This interdisciplinary programme develops critical and theoretical understanding of the social and historical importance of film within a European context, covering aspects of the cinema of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and Spain. The MA offers a practical component in video-making in which students make either a documentary or ‘fictional’ film. This film can bear on an aspect of one or more European cinemas, or be a fictional piece of work which takes into account questions of style and auteurship studied during the programme. The dissertation may also be by practice, namely, a piece of film-work instead of the traditional dissertation. Students will be able to take advantage of exchanges established with European institutions that allow them to spend one third of their time studying in France, Italy or Spain. The University possesses a major research collection of international stature in the form of the Bill Douglas Centre for the History of Cinema and Popular Culture, housing one of Britain’s largest public collections of books, prints, artefacts and ephemera relating to the history and prehistory of cinema. Certain option modules are specifically targeted to exploit this archive. The library also houses more than 7,000 films on video.

Entry requirements A good Second Class Honours degree or equivalent in a subject that includes some coverage of Film Studies. A good knowledge of English is required, but it is not necessary to possess a foreign language, since all instruction is in English and the films are subtitled.
