About Sport Sciences at University of Groningen

How can you identify the great athletes of the future? How do you optimize athletic performance? And what influence does physical activity have on a child's development? This programme will show you.

The two-year Master's programme is meant for students with ascientific fascination for sport. You will study athletic behaviourfrom multiple perspectives, using theories about cognition,psychology and physiology.
As a student of this programme, you will acquire an advancedunderstanding of issues in the field of sport sciences, bothapplied and fundamental. You will practice in measuring andanalyzing sports performance and gain familiarity with researchmethods and advanced statistics. Also, you will learn to developoptimal programmes to teach and train sport-related abilities andskills.
The programme is concentrated around four research areas. The firstcentres on physical activity, sports and cognition in children. Thesecond deals with talent identification and development.Perception, action and decision making in sports is the third area.And in the fourth, you learn about performance analysis andoptimization in sports.
It is possible to do a crossover between the Master's programmes inSport Sciences and Human Movement Sciences.

After graduation, you can continue your academic career in a PhDtrajectory. You can also work as a scientist for a professionalsport team or as a scientific advisor at sport associations such asthe Olympic federation. In addition, you can develop training andexercise programmes for ergonomic, orthopaedic or educationalinstitutions or develop sport, health and welfare policies forgovernment agencies. With a teacher's certificate you can work as alecturer in education.

Entree requirements are:

  • a bachelor degree (bachelor of science) in Human MovementSciences or a related field (e.g. Sport and Exercise Sciences,Kinesiology, etc)
  • or education and experience on a comparable level (includingprofound knowledge of research methods, statistics and academicwriting)**
  • preferably high school degree with English, Mathematics,Physics, and Biology being part of the exam (up until lastyear)
  • ** The Admissions Office will advise the Admissions Board onyour application, after which the board will decide if you meet theadmission requirements in terms of general level of previouseducation and specific background knowledge.

  • OR A Bachelor degree in a related field of applied sciences(HBO; e.g., physiotherapy, occupational therapy, sport studies,human movement technology, Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy(MIRT))
  • OR education and experience on a comparable level(1)
  • AND high school degree (VWO, or HAVO for HBO students) withEnglish, Mathematics, Physics, and Biology being part of theexam(2)
