About Arabic and French, BA - at University of Leeds

This exciting degree allows you to build advanced skills in two major world languages, as well as exploring Francophone, Middle Eastern and Islamic culture worldwide.

If you have an A-level in French, you'll be able to learn Arabic from scratch. Core language modules will allow you to develop your reading, listening, writing and speaking skills in each language, while we offer a wide range of optional modules allowing you to explore the culture, politics and history of the Francophone and Arabic-speaking worlds.

Our School of Languages, Cultures and Societies is large and diverse enough to offer truly flexible degrees where you can pursue your interests. You could study topics as diverse as Arabic literature, antiracism movements in France, the complex politics of the Middle East and North Africa or gender in medieval French romance. There's also the chance to try one of the other languages we offer from Persian to Punjabi, or to practise skills such as translation or interpreting.

At Leeds we have a wealth of resources to help you make the most of your studies. The department's archives contain 500 Arabic manuscripts and 10,000 archaeological artefacts, ranging from Pharaonic to early Palestinian eras. There are also extensive library resources, and the University Library runs a full training programme to help you exploit them.

At the other end of the spectrum, our fully equipped Language Zone features digital language labs, audio-video practice booths and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Our Electronic Resource Information Centre offers specialised computing facilities for Translation Studies and we have Interpreter Training Suites, allowing you to explore your career options.

  • Course content

A Joint Honours degree allows you to study the same core topics as students on each Single Honours course, but you'll take fewer options and discovery modules so you can fit in both subjects.

In your first year you'll improve your written and spoken French while taking intensive language modules to build your skills in Arabic. You'll also study one of our Cornerstone modules, bringing together your two subjects. Core modules will introduce you to Arabic and Islamic history as well as French history and culture - all preparing you to spend your second year studying at a partner institution in an Arabic-speaking country.

When you come back, you'll have improved Arabic language skills and a deeper cultural awareness. You can build on this in your third year, taking advanced language classes and choosing from an array of optional modules on aspects of life in Francophone and Arabic-speaking societies before spending a term in France.

You'll be confident in both languages during your final year, with advanced language study and the choice to work on translation or interpreting. You can also choose from a wider variety of optional modules, covering topics like Arabic stylistics or African and Caribbean culture in French. You'll also demonstrate your skills with an independently researched dissertation on a topic of your choice.
