About Economics and Finance, BSc - at University of Leeds

This course gives you the opportunity to combine a broad understanding of economic theory with knowledge of the financial foundations of firms, financial markets and institutions.

Covering the core concepts, practices and techniques of the subject, you'll develop your knowledge of microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics, as well as financial and management accounting. Diverse optional modules will also allow you to tailor the programme to suit your own interests and career plans, with topics from financial derivatives to economic development or auditing.

You'll learn from experts in a challenging and supportive environment where you'll have access to world-leading research in the field. You'll also gain the analytical, quantitative, computing, presentation and other transferable skills required by economists working in finance and by employers in both the private and public sectors.

  • Course content

Our degrees have a modular structure. This means that compulsory modules provide you with the core knowledge and skills that you need, while optional and discovery modules allow you to shape your course to suit your personal interests and career aspirations.

Year 1 is designed to give you a good grounding in the key topics across economics and finance. You'll learn the basics of management and financial accounting alongside fundamental financial concepts and techniques and economic theory. At the same time, you'll build the skills you need to conduct your own research in economics alongside your mathematics and statistical knowledge.

Compulsory modules in Year 2 allow you to refine your mathematical and statistical skills, while you'll develop your understanding of microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics. You'll also gain in-depth knowledge of corporate finance, and have the choice to continue studying either financial or management accounting.

In your final year, you'll continue with microeconomics and macroeconomics. You'll also have the chance to specialise through your choice of optional modules: you could learn about corporate governance, economic development, international business finance and a range of other topics, depending on your personal interests and career plans. You'll also showcase the knowledge and skills that you've developed through an independently researched dissertation on a topic of your choice.
