Studying a software engineering degree will help students to understand the key concepts of computer software, including the technical knowledge needed to develop high quality software systems.  Most software engineering degree programs will also focus on enhancing the business skills of students to help them in the field once they have graduated.

Most courses will cover a range of topics needed for a full understanding of software engineering. These can include core courses in digital systems, computer science, information systems, software development, databases, software security and programming. At various stages during the degree program students will also be able to specialise in certain areas of software engineering, or undertake a work placement to help further their software engineering skills.

A software engineering degree can be taken at both the undergraduate and postgraduate study level, and can take anywhere between one and four years to complete. Entrance to a software engineering degree will differ depending on the country and institution you wish to apply to. Previous experience in the computing and IT sector will benefit any application, however, is not compulsory. Most institutions will expect a certain level of previous education such as exam grades from A Levels or College. If your first language is not English, and the course is taught in English you may be required to have a minimum IELTS score, and write a letter of intent to support your application.
