The Master of Science (MSc) programme in Educational Science and Technology is for anyone fascinated by education and training, yet not intending to become a teacher.
Focus and disciplines
The Educational Science and Technology programme focuses on the design and evaluation of teaching and learning programmes in schools and organizations. The scope is wide: from the instruction of young children in primary school to developing interactive materials for vocational education, and from assessing the quality of schooling and school performance to talent and leadership development, and in-company re-training.
As an Educational Science and Technology student, you will take a high-tech approach to your studies while never losing sight of the human dimension. You will learn all about theories of learning and assessment, instructional design and implementation, theoretical foundations and practical applications of (technology-based) learning environments and interventions. You will also discover how to design different learning scenarios and curriculums, and how to translate your designs into recommendations and solutions to practical problems.

Academic teacher training programme
You can combine the Master's programma Educational Science and Technology with a teacher training programme. After your (Dutch) vwo degree, you can start the academic teacher training programme. The complete study route (teacher training programme + pre-Master + Master) takes four years to complete. You follow the teacher training programme at a higher academic level at the Saxion University of Applied Sciences and the Master's programme Educational Science and Technology at the University of Twente. Annelotte Derkink, 22, fourth year Advanced Technology student
"Playing an active role in university life gives you an edge"
"I can really recommend being actively involved in student life alongside your studies. It's great to make your voice heard and to work as a team to devise and organize something for others. That gives me a real sense of pride. And, of course, you learn so much at the same time." Fourth year Advanced Technology student Annelotte Derkink, age 22, tells us about her active role in university life. Annelotte is currently taking a year-long break from her degree programme to be a full-time member of the Student Union Board.
"At the University of Twente there are so many activities you can do alongside your studies. I started by organizing the Parents' Day for my programme's study association. It gave me such a good feeling when I saw how well it went and how enthusiastic the parents were. I then joined the lustrum committee for student association Taste. We organized a total of twelve activities in three weeks. After that, I took on a fun and educational position as an open day coordinator. We spent a lot of time preparing, especially in the week leading up to the open days. We practically locked ourselves in the project room for 80 hours that week. It was hard work, but we had fun. We came up with a new route system to guide visitors from the central reception area to the various programmes. It was great to see how well our system worked on the open days. There were so many people - I think there were around 1,400 visitors. It gave us such a good feeling to see everyone heading in the right direction!"
"When I felt I had mastered the art of organization, I became a part-time member of the Enactus board. Enactus is a global non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life and living standards of people in need through entrepreneurial action. The organization provides a platform for university students in 36 countries to work with businesses and academic leaders to develop projects that transform challenges and ideas into sustainable solutions. Together with others, I established a completely new board. That was an interesting challenge!"
"I am currently a full-time board member at the Student Union. This will look good on my CV, especially as I'm taking an exact sciences programme. This function shows that I have experience in organizing events and that I enjoy working as part of a team. I have learnt so much from being active in university life. Not only have I developed my organizational, leadership, teamwork and managerial skills, I have also learnt to define a vision and work towards achieving it. However, I'm also aware that you sometimes have to start working without knowing exactly where you're heading. My active role has also helped me realize what I enjoy doing. I consider myself as somebody who connects people. I enjoy bringing people into contact with one another to help them."
As a female student of Advanced Technology, Annelotte is in the minority. "The fact that few women choose to study exact sciences was an extra motivation for me, as I like to be different. I've always been interested in the exact sciences. I enjoy logical thinking. I'm fascinated by topics such as how the universe came into being and where we come from. You can search for the answers to those questions using mathematics and physics. Advanced Technology is a very broad-based programme in which you learn to use engineering and technology to develop multidisciplinary solutions to complex problems. It gives you so many career options."
Vitto Bonnemayers, 21, third-year Industrial Design student
"I just enjoy it all"
Vitto Bonnemayers, age 21, is a third-year Industrial Design student. "I have a tendency to do too many extracurricular activities, even though I also enjoy studying. I maybe a bit of a geek, but I just enjoy all the things I do," Vitto says, laughing. This year, Vitto is chairman of the Green Team Twente. He also works as a student assistant and runs his own business. Despite his busy schedule, he still manages to make time for his hobbies, cycling and climbing.
"I had an active role at secondary school too. The school no longer organized a leavers’ stunt, which we thought was a real shame. So a group of us set up a committee. We organized a really cool day with fun activities such as paintballing in the school playground. I was a member of the Participation Council and the Financial Council too. I enjoyed doing extracurricular activities."
"As soon as I started studying at the University of Twente, I became an active member of Daedalus, my programme’s study association. I organized a lot of parties and a number of more serious activities, such as Parents’ Day. I also set up the photography committee. I thought it was strange that a programme like Industrial Design didn’t have a photography committee, as photography ties in really well the programme, and most of the students enjoy taking photos with a single-lens reflex camera in their spare time. I mentioned this, and other students agreed that it would be a good idea. They suggested I set up the committee myself. And so I did. The committee is now well established and other students have taken over. It’s great to see that it’s all going so well. Everyone was so enthusiastic and positive and willing to help. There is no city in the Netherlands where students are more active alongside their studies than in Enschede."
Together with two of his friends, Vitto set up his own webshop: www.kipsterclothing.nl. "We started our company purely to gain experience. We aren’t bothered about making lots of money from it. We sell clothing that we have designed ourselves, and all our designs are related to chicken. It began as a bit of a joke, because we always ate chicken when we were studying together. When one of the guys went to Hungary, we had a T-shirt printed for him with a chicken leg on it. People in Hungary thought the T-shirt was from an official brand. That gave us the idea to start our own clothing line and webshop."
Green Team Twente
After two years studying, Vitto decided it was time was a break: "I decided to take a year out to fully commit to being chairman of the Green Team Twente. This position is wide-ranging, as is my degree programme, Industrial Design. This broad basis makes me well suited to being a chairman and team manager. I have good knowledge of all fields, but I’m not a specialist. I know a fair bit about marketing and PR, but I’m also a member of the mechanics team. I know enough about electronics too. I am well suited to a supervisory role, as I have the knowledge to contribute ideas and to keep track of the tasks at hand."
"I chose the Green Team because I want to help build a car that is fit for the future. The Green Team is smaller than the Solar Team, which means I have more freedom. The Green Team is more experimental so you get to choose how you do things. I could also have chosen to become a member of the Solar Boat Team or the RoboTeam, but I’m really fascinated by cars. It’s really exciting to work on the car of the future. I truly believe that hydrogen can help us achieve sustainable mobility. Universities need to have a pioneering role in developing effective, sustainable solutions for the world."

"One of the things I really like about Twente is that the various teams collaborate so well together. In Delft, for example, there is a lot of fierce internal competition. In Twente, there is a sense of harmony - we help each other. I really enjoy studying in Twente. I am determined to keep both my feet firmly on the ground, no matter what the future holds. At the University of Twente, I have learnt to work as part of a team and to stay level-headed, whether things are going well or not. It’s nice to work in such a friendly, open and pleasant environment. Not many universities are like that. The friendly atmosphere and the level-headed take on things tend to be overlooked, but I think they’re really important. Twente ought to be proud of them. I think we should do more to tell people about how fun and honest we are here in Twente."
Vitto also works as a student assistant for design courses: "I am now a student assistant for four courses, both in the Industrial Design programme and in the Creative Technology programme. I am also the coordinator of the Industrial Design information team. We organize events such as open days, workshops and individual orientation days."
"I’ve wanted to become a car designer since I was just six years old. That’s the reason I’m studying Industrial Design. All of the other activities I do are not just to make my CV look impressive. I know it’s important to have an impressive CV, but I’m convinced that your personality is the determining factor when you apply for a job. I believe that all the activities I do alongside my studies reflect who I am as a person. They have helped me grow professionally. For example, I have learnt to work well with other people. But most importantly, I really enjoy what I do. All the activities I do have even led me to question whether or not I still want to become a car designer. I’ve found so many other things I’m enthusiastic about."
Laura, 23, Communication Studies and Business Administration
"The great reposibility makes it all the more challenging"
Twenty-three-year-old Master's student Laura is studying Communication Studies and Business Administration. She shares the role of team leader at Pre-U with Lisanne. The two students indirectly manage around 300 students. "It is a great responsibility, but that makes it all the more challenging."
Laura says "Pre-U is the University of Twente's pre-university programme. The programme aims to generate enthusiasm for science and engineering and technology among primary and secondary school pupils. It gives pupils the opportunity to find out more about further education and what the University of Twente has to offer. Secondary school pupils can attend lectures by taking part in our masterclasses, and in our Xperimenta programme, primary school pupils are also given real lectures by a professor. The pupils get to conduct their own experiments wearing a big lab coat. It's great to watch."
"As team leaders, Lisanne and I are responsible for managing and advising around 20 student coordinators. We are the linking pin between the management team and the student team at Pre-U. We work with the management team at a policy level, and we make sure that student coordinators promote Pre-U's vision and objectives. The student coordinators are in charge of the supervisors who are involved in our projects. Together, we are responsible for a team of around 300 students.
"I had part-time jobs in my first year as a Communication Science student. I tutored secondary school pupils and visited schools to tell pupils about studying Communication Science and Psychology. I wanted to gain more professional experience that was related to my degree programme. When I was in my second year, I applied to work at the Pre-U information desk. In this role, I was responsible for the information desk together with four others. Working at the information desk taught me how to work in a structured manner and as part of a team. After a year and a half, I became a coordinator of decentralized projects. As a coordinator, you are responsible for all aspects of a project, from organizing an event to drafting the budget and hiring supervisors. Examples of projects I was responsible for include School Visits, Personal Assistants for Teachers and the Profile Project Competition. At first, I was quite nervous about organizing big events, but you learn so much from the experience. During my first couple of years as a student, I was also a member of the committees of the Communiqué Study Association, AEGEE Student Association and Quenouille Student Association. When I was on the AEGEE committee, we organized a real-life Mario Kart race in the centre of Enschede. It was so much fun, and I learned a lot."
"Pre-U really challenges me. Since working there, I've developed various skills. I've learnt to organize, collaborate, manage projects, implement policies, and lots more. You also learn more about yourself. You find out what your strengths and weaknesses are, and discover how you can deal with them. My strengths, for example, are maintaining structure and keeping a good overview of a situation. They're both skills I learnt at Pre-U. I like being in control, but unfortunately that's not always possible in real-life situations. Accepting this is something I still need to work on. Everyone has things they particularly enjoy and things they find difficult. The most important thing at Pre-U is that you can learn from your mistakes. That's something I really like about working there. There is also a strong focus on cooperation. We do everything together, as a team. I'm so glad I get to work with such an enthusiastic and diverse team. I learn something new every day!
In the past year, Pre-U has been given various assignments by the Executive Board. Lisanne and I sit down with the management team to discuss how we should approach these assignments. One of the assignments was to link Pre-U more closely to the University of Twente. As part of this assignment, we changed the name of the programme from Twente Academy to Pre-U, and developed a new corporate identity. We now cooperate more closely with the Marketing and Communication department at the University of Twente. One of the other assignments was related to internationalization. We are now in the process of contacting schools in Germany to set up collaborative projects.
Lisanne and I are complete opposites, so we complement each other well at work. Despite the fact that we are so different, we always seem to be on the same page. We get on really well with each other. It's just as well we get on, as we share virtually everything, including our schedules!"
Educational Programmes in Practice
In the work I do, I come across a lot of things I have learnt in Communication Studies and Business Administration. There is plenty of opportunity to put my studies into practice. My work makes my degree programmes seem much more relevant. It brings them to life. Another good thing is that Lisanne is studying something different. She is studying Educational Science and Technology. She views our work from an educationalist perspective, whereas I look at it more from a business perspective. We complement each other in this sense too."
Communication Studies and Business Administration
"I had difficulty choosing a degree programme as I enjoy everything. I attended a lot of open days. I was looking for a programme that combines business administration with something social or creative. Communication Science is exactly that. It's a fantastic programme. I also chose to do a minor in Psychology. After my Bachelor's programme I wanted to do a Master's in Communication Studies, but I also wanted to find out more about business administration. I wanted to get the whole picture, so I'm taking both Master's programmes. The two programmes tie in really well together. You get a good idea of how communication creates added value for a business. At first, I was slightly apprehensive that Business Administration might be too focused on how to generate profit, but there's a lot more to it than that. You also learn a lot about the human aspect: about what an entrepreneur goes through during the start-up process. I enjoy studying, and love learning new things. I guess I'm a nerd really."

"I chose the University of Twente as I really felt at home here. I had a good feeling about the place. There is an informal atmosphere, and the university is small-scale and friendly. Everyone knows each other, including the students and lecturers. Back then, I didn't even know that Enschede was such a nice city - I only found that out when I moved here. I certainly don't regret my choice."
