About Electronic Systems at The School of Science and Technology, Nottingham Trent University

Develop your research skills in electronic systems, enriching your prior learning and giving you the tools to succeed in your chosen specialism.

This Electronic Systems Masters course gives you the opportunity to develop research skills in computing specialisms to meet your interests and career development needs. The structure of this course allows you to choose modules and combine material from any of our taught Computing and Technology Master's courses. You will work with our highly regarded academics, who are active in a broad range of research areas.

As a student at NTU you will benefit from the excellent facilities and equipment available. The School of Science and Technology has a dedicated research facility for specialist work in the area of imaging and display, housing a class 100 clean room, X-ray security and analysis system, and a suite of display characterisation rooms.

What you'll study

You will undertake a Research Methods module at the beginning of this course, which is designed to develop knowledge, skills and experience that will provide you with a firm foundation for your main Research Project.

You then have the option to choose two further modules, subject to meeting pre-requisite requirements, in order to develop specific technical knowledge relating to your research project. These can be selected from the full range of modules delivered across our computing and technology taught master's courses.

  • Modules

    Core modules:

    • Research Methods (20 cp) - You will develop the skills of research and enquiry that will enhance your independent learning abilities and enable you to write effective project reports and technical papers.
    • Research Project (120 cp) - You will develop advanced skills in a relevant specialist topic area through the completion of a research project. The project integrates knowledge of the course and includes the design and / or development of an innovative solution to a complex and challenging technical problem presented as a dissertation or technical research paper.

    Optional modules:

    You will choose two modules which include the below options but could, with the agreement of your tutor, take any modules within our Computing and Technology suite.

    • Digital Control (20 cp) - By means of case studies, you'll develop your knowledge and understanding of object-oriented 4th-generation programming, as applied to digital control.
    • Robotics and Cybernetics (20 cp) - You'll develop knowledge of the relevant theories, advanced techniques and practices underpinning modern robotic and cybernetic systems - including robot design, construction and programming techniques.
    • Applied Artificial Intelligence (20 cp) - Learn about a variety of artificial intelligence methods - such as machine learning, and reasoning techniques - how they can be used to solve real-world problems.
    • Software Engineering 1 (20 cp) - This module will develop your programming skills using the C++ language, and enhance your understanding of software implementation principles.
    • Embedded Systems (20 cp) - This module introduces the theory and practice of embedded engineering including performance, limitations, and the benefits of micro-controllers and other embedded controller systems.
    • Group Design Project (20 cp) - During this module, you'll focus mainly on the technical aspects of developing a cross-disciplinary group design project.
    • Computer Security (20 cp) - Learn how to critically analyse security problems affecting computing systems at the operating system and application levels, and devise security solutions.
    • Wireless Communications (20 cp) - Develop knowledge and understanding of wireless communication technologies, practical constraints, and their applications to simulated or practical implementation scenarios.
    • Mobile Networks (20 cp) - You'll develop an awareness of the requirements, capabilities and constraints of a variety of mobile computing technologies and the networking facilities that can be built.
  • Learn a new language

    Alongside your study you also have the opportunity to learn a new language. The University Language Programme (ULP) is available to all students and gives you the option of learning a totally new language or improving the skills you already have.

    • Enhance your communication skills;
    • Enrich your experience when travelling abroad; and
    • Boost your career prospects.

    We have a rich mix of knowledge ranging from software development for different types of systems through to hardware aspects such as networking for you to learn from.

    We engage fully in our subject area and this engagement feeds directly and indirectly into our teaching. Professor David Brown leads several projects, funded by the European Union, in games and assistive technology while Professor Paul Evans' innovative developments in security are supported by USA Dept of Homeland Security.

    Other examples of our activity are:

    • developing patents (for example, in voice signal processing)
    • involvement in the GameCity Festival
    • organising conferences on Interactive Technology and Games and on Intelligent Environments
    • working with local companies on funded projects e.g. enhancing the capability of the press association to search their image database
    • publishing novel findings in research publications on for example financial prediction, mobile communications, detection of human behaviour patterns.

How you're taught

The individual MRes programme plan for you will need to be approved by the MRes Programme Leader prior to starting, to ensure that the choice of taught modules is appropriate for the specialist area chosen for your research project, and is matched to your prior learning experience.

The various teaching methods are:

  • lectures to introduce and develop concepts and to explore the application of these concepts
  • workshops and laboratories to develop skills and appreciate concepts
  • seminars to provide academic support
  • case study and project work to develop a deeper understanding of concepts and applications

Careers and employability

Current demands are greater than ever for individuals to attain postgraduate levels of qualification in an increasingly competitive jobs market. As a result, the Electronic Systems postgraduate degree has been designed to meet the needs of students and employers, providing superior qualified graduates to national and international employers.

Alternatively, if you wish to continue your research as a career, this qualification is an ideal basis for further study leading to a PhD. If you continue your studies at Nottingham Trent University, work originally undertaken for an MRes may be put towards building a research portfolio leading to a PhD.
